Culture and lifestyle of Ayutthaya

People
·      Also known as Siamese.
·      Shows great affection for their children, even today.
·      Status plays a crucial role in all-day-life.
·      Smoking was a great pleasure for both men and women.
·      Many diseases, the Siamese believed, were due to magic.
·      Two main languages – common language and Pali (was much more sophisticated than the common siamese)
·      Many common people lived on boats.

Gambling
·      Cockfighting was abolished by King Narai but still continues today as part of the culture there.
·      A recurring problem since those time and as of today.

Work
·      Siamese would work six months of every year to please the king.
·      The other six months would be men relaxing while the women work the fields and sell in the market.


Religion
·      Main religion was Theravada Buddhism.
·      Political and social system were incorporated from Hindu scriptures.
·      The natural world was home to number of spirits which are part of Satsana Phi

Satsana Phi – is a form of animist religious beliefs traditionally and historically practiced by groups of ethnic Tai peoples.


Arts and Performances

·      Khon – A dance genre from Thailand. Involves, men in masks accompanied by narrators and a traditional piphat ensemble. Performances are based on the tales of the Epic Ramakien.
·      Lakhon nai – A That performing art originating in the royal court of Thailand. Involves, slow choreography accompanied by a piphat ensemble. Performances are also baed on the Epic Ramakien.

Reflection

By what I have researched from the culture of Ayutthaya, I feel that they have come a long way in preserving their heritage. From what is seen in today’s modern ruins from the past, I learnt that history is part of a progressive growth to the future.
