Ayutthaya City Design

Ayutthaya was founded in 1350 and was the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom. It the grew to be one of the world’s largest and most cosmopolitan urban areas and a center of global diplomacy and commerce. Ayutthaya is an island at the confluence of three rivers: the Chao Phraya River, the Lopburi River and the Pa Sak River. This site was chosen because it was located above the tidal bore of the Gukf of Siam as it existed at that time, thus preventing attact of the city by the sea-going warships of other nations. The location also helped to protect the city from seasonal flooding.

Not only that, you can also find some great temples there. Like Wat Phra Si Sanphet which is the largest temple in Ayutthaya, known for its distinctive row of restored chedis (Thai-style stupas, more rounded appearance) found on many images of the city. Housed within the grounds of the former royal palace, the temple was used only for royal religious ceremonies. It once housed a 16 m high Buddha covered with 340 kg of gold, but the Burmese set fire to the statue to melt the gold and destroyed the temple in the process.

Other temple is Viharn Phra Mongkol Bopit, Sri Sanphet Rd (Next to Wat Phra Si Sanphet). An impressive building that houses a large bronze cast Buddha image. It was originally enshrined outside the Grand Palace to the east, but it was later transferred to the current location and covered with a Mondop.
